Singing About Jerusalem
Acrylic on canvas, 60" x 48"
The Huntington Collection, Columbus, Ohio
From childhood I have adored those Salvation Army girls. “THE ANGELS are coming” we would all shout when we heard the brass band in the distance on a Sunday morning. It was not until 1980, when a wise friend gave me a Victorian Salvationists family album, that I began to understand this reevolutionary women’s movement (the bonnets are really crash helmets).
The Jerusalem they are singing about is the magic city of their dreams. Strangely, this painting hangs by the door to the boardroom in a bank in Columbus, Ohio, USA.
